Weird Speculations
Which I have no plan to implement.

But, give my use of the Collective Subconscious on Comet Fall, or the retatianed memories of the Prophets in the Hive Mind . . . if one of the Old Gods died, would summoning him or her still work? I've got them and their horses popping in, dressed differently, hair different and so forth. How about the whole deal?

Mind you, I really hope no one tries to reconstitute Art or Edmund.

And then I'd have to consider if they had souls or just the Collective.

No, no writing happened today, so far, and probably won't at all.

Maybe it would pull in a baby god to the role? I could see some frustrated artist cursing the muse and praying to the god of Art not seriously, and getting some poor sap of a baby god who doesn't want the role but likes art. What would it take to reshape the image from how Marty left it?

For a new God of Art, I figured probably either Jani/Blue Jay who has the jewelry shop between Sandy's dress shop and Emerald's tea shop, or Kipp Hasty, the Musician.

The God of Vice might be one of the Black Island Gang, if he comes back too often. Probably Heso or Mag. Eldon's veered hard into a protector role, so I think the God of Bestiality won't be seen again.

Hm. Kipp is already the God of Music at the Embassy Fair. The Rip Crossing Kids were getting very powerful,
matapampamuphoff on October 8th, 2019 08:34 am (UTC)
Yes. That was why I thought he might get pulled into an expanded roles covering all the Arts.

But if it's just visual arts . . . Ra'd should minimize his exposure.

Not that the God of Art is going to face many emergencies. One trusts that artistic angst would be insufficient.

Some randome ideas on how a god of art could function:

Is there much of a Comet fall art scene?

Perhaps Embassy needs to grow an artists quarter. I can imagine a new art scene coming about on Embassy as different cultures create fusions into new ways of seeing, hearing, dressing etc.

Passion would likely be vital in a god of art. Being in the zone. Creating.

Perhaps leaving random bits of art in odd places.

You have some impressive architects / builders, who get lost in trances.

Perhaps the god of art is a muse.

Dionysus is interesting. God of theatre, music, rebirth, uses divine madness, shapeshifting, passion.

Can someone call Mercy out of her bubble? Would she go back when she dismisses the problem? Of course, why would anyone want her? Hmm, would she come to someone who just wishes they were dead?
matapampamuphoff on October 8th, 2019 04:27 pm (UTC)
Re: Mercy
I don't think she could be summoned with the bubble closed. Xen, for instance, in _Meet the Family_ was still healing, but fortunately either out of his bubble, or it was open when Rael summoned him.

Doesn't look like I'd be interrupting anything, so I'll veer in another direction.

Premise: for some value undefined (but deemed sufficient for the job), a company owned or organized by Xen has accepted a contract to "ensure fair and safe elections" in a "backwards" political entity. Because I was just reading an article about upcoming elections in Afghanistan, that's my model - ongoing violence, factions all over the place, political interference from neighbors, etc.

1. What tactics might Xen (and company) use? What would definitely NOT be used. How successful might such tactics be.

Here's an example I just thought of: creating polling stations that are protected by bubbles/corridors, such that anyone voting could be sent away safely, without being exposed to violence.

Bonus question: In such a situation, what Gods or Baby Gods could get called, assuming sufficient connection to Cometfall?

matapampamuphoff on October 8th, 2019 01:54 am (UTC)
Since I think an outside contractor would have the personnel nor the local respect and trust necessary for the job.

Assuming there was a side that wasn't cheating, I would write this as Xen lecturing on how things of this nature can only be fixed from the inside, and when the bad guys tossed a bomb as they drove by, turning the leadership of the cheating faction into bronze statues.
matapampamuphoff on October 8th, 2019 08:36 am (UTC)
Or more basically. "Not my job, try calling a God of Politics--and I really hope there's no one to answer."
matapampamuphoff on October 8th, 2019 11:56 pm (UTC)
* sigh* That was supposed to be "WouldN'T have the personnel"

I wonder how Will Michaelson would do, as an Election Judge?

I've always thought that the way it worked was subconscious magic use on the part of the Old Gods: when the God of War is summoned, his subconscious (which has read the collective subconscious's idea of what a God of War looks like) takes over. So without any conscious decisions involved, he pulls open the bubble where he keeps his armor, forms a recognition point on the person summoning him, and Travels.

In which case, if he's dead, the summoner just wouldn't get a response: the phone is ringing but nobody's answering, so nothing happens. Or, as someone else speculated, a baby god would find himself/herself pulled into the role.

The collective is the motivating force. They figured out how to teleport by analyzing how they got summoned. The clothes they show up in are formed by the collective out of who knows what, but they are solid and real.

Most of them, Like Xen, collect a "go bag" of stuff, but it seems to be more of a hint than anything else. No matter what he's got, when summoned to the One World he's in a sparkly tuxedo, with a classy hair cut, even when he's healing and bald, back home.

Which was what made me wonder if the whole man might get recreated when summoned. Don't think I'll go there, though.

Seems to me there are several possibilities. First, and perhaps most interesting, the collective subconscious might grab someone and add the overlay, making them the new God of whatever flavor. Another possibility might be that the overlay would show up, without a filling! A ghost of a God, so to speak. Waiting for someone to make enough impression on the collective subconscious to get yanked into the role. Or perhaps, most squeamish, the dead body would show up, with the overlay? So we have zombie Gods, dancing to the strings of the collective subconscious. I think any of the three could be argued, and they all have interesting aspects. Hum, wait a minute, as the dimensions multiply, do the people also multiply? So while our local Art is dead, dead, dead... there's another copy just a dimension away? Fun to speculate about!

Yes, like I've got Two One Worlds, now, with a lot of duplicated people.

I have posted Xen finding a Comet Fall split, haven't I?
(Anonymous) on October 8th, 2019 10:39 am (UTC)

For some reason I thought it was in Tales from the Multiverse but a quick check suggests I was mistaken.
matapampamuphoff on October 8th, 2019 01:16 pm (UTC)
I was going to put it in there, but I just really didn't have any need for yet another duplicate set of the old Telies.
(Anonymous) on October 8th, 2019 07:38 pm (UTC)
As I recall you also said that it had decided to be a full novel as well (hint hint), so it would not fit.
(Anonymous) on October 8th, 2019 07:43 pm (UTC)
It seems more likely a new baby god would step in fir Comet Fall at least
(Anonymous) on October 9th, 2019 07:14 pm (UTC)
On a completely different track, I'd like to see the first "god summoning" that's uniquely from The Empire of the One. I could see two different scenarios, but both come from the idea of a "God" that is very different from any of the original Telies.

Most promising would be to see an un-diagnosed Warrior called for something. Almost as interesting, would be for a Comet-fall person to be called through the gates to a completely new "calling", with all the effects of WTF?

The problem comes from trying to imagine a call that does not duplicate any of the existing Gods or proto-gods or baby gods. And I don't have any ideas about that yet.
