Summer Interns
I was going to have Arno and Ryol etc. intern with Team Fifty.

But it would be much more intertaining if they were in an average team, with a reasonably competent leader who was completely ignorant of their antecedents. Must tell it from his horrified POV.

That does sound like a lot more fun. Don't be so mean to him that you drive him to drink!

Explorer, action or info?
matapampamuphoff on September 2nd, 2019 12:28 pm (UTC)
Oh, hard to say. They'll be doing something useful and practical, like laying out a thousand laser repeater sets, from Disco to Wolf World.

No chance they could get into trouble.

I swear, this is all, until I finish both Kaat and Marooned. I really do need to kick them both out the door.

Chapter One
1 Yusef 1416 yp
SGA, Gate City, One World

Uxly Withione Quito looked at the addendum to his orders and heaved a deep sigh.

Everyone stopped and looked at him.

“Well. You’ll all be delighted to know that we’re the lucky recipients of no less than seven interns from the Directorate School.” He repressed another sigh. “Whom I am absolutely positive will be an asset to our installing over a thousand laser repeaters from Disco to this Wolf World.”

His crew exchanged glances.

“Do they have any training at all in any sort of physical labor?” Sap sounded hopeful.

“Any cute women?” Id’s grin faded as Uxly sighed again.

And glanced at his computer screen. “We’re enjoined to please not damage the Prime Councilor’s son, nor the twin stepson and step daughter of the Presidential Director.”

“Oh shit.” Cock, Okqw, formally.

“I don’t know anything about the other four.” Uxly turned as a small flat pulled up to the work yard.

Young bodies in field khakis so new the packaging creases still showed leaped out and off, grabbing backpacks, and suitcases.
His eyes focused first on a gorgeous young woman, blonde hair shining in the sun. Very young.

Oh One! Are they send out children! Surely they’re not sending out teenagers!

Two brunettes, both spectacular . . . and then a redhead. A magnificent mane of curls around a perfect face . . .

His brain scrambled for help older than the Prophets. Why me, oh Lord. What hast I done . . .

Two scrawny boys, then strolling up behind them, a handsome young man, with a rather strong resemblance to Prime Minister Igsu. All swaggering arrogance . . .

. . . to deserve this?

The potential for mayhem is ginormous.

In the midnight hour, she cried more, more, more......

You're a bad girl! And I love it. This can be so much fun.

Thanks for your outstanding Work

I liked the snippet you've written on this. You can still have them intern with Team 50 for their second internship, if you want.

matapampamuphoff on September 3rd, 2019 07:02 pm (UTC)
Hmm, Team 50's out in Wolf World. They might need to rescue the Work crew from the interns. Hard to say, at this point.

in regard to KAAT
During her insertion she appears to ignore that the entire site is under Kingdom of the West surveillance. Is she just lucky?

Re: in regard to KAAT
Reactive camouflage and mental shields. Not that there were many watchers, at that point. Lefty, Oscar, and Bran were the only magicians in the Army

Note that Kaat infiltrated in 1376 *year of the prophets* which would be 1374 on Comet Fall. Tromp was giving birth to her quintuplets, Rustle and Xen, aged 3 or 4, were probably still in Verona.

Any chance that someone managed to save some of the "wine of the gods" during the auralian invasion, so that there is an underground joy juice circulating on Earth. Interesting what an epedimic of un-legal births would mean - also what is going to be improved on the genetics (since the artificial ESP genes are not available - the supposed source for those genes were occasional natural occurances). Would this result in "natural" "gods"? Would the purple genes spread underground?

You know how you get energized by music, dancing, fun parties? The power genes were supposed to be based on a (entirely theoretical, in my mind) gene complex responsible for that.

Which could in fact be the source, but on the parallel world that produced Jaejong Chou.

I would not be surprised if some of his genes aren't floating around, undiscovered, especially since his weren't organized into very noticeable packets.

Then there are the Russian Supersoldiers who may have spread their genes around.

And the stranded Purps and Powers . . .

Several women with Dallas Exploration visited Karista and may have gotten pregnant. I never followed up on that.

However, without testing, there won't be any deliberate re-concentrations of all the genes, and on Earth, with genetic testing at birth, the babies with noticeable "genetic irregularities" would be given terminal licenses, and the contraceptive "everyone gets them" implants and vas blocks could never be legally removed.

So the chance of a spontaneous God-Level kid is infinitesimal . . . Except for Harp, who has no Earther in him at all, but was born and raised there. Or a concentration of Purp genes in a subculture with a known propensity for back alley removal of implants and vas blocks.

An accidental mixing of Jaejong's genes into the Purp community? An interesting possibility. Which would probably not be recognized, and all magic accredited to the Purp power and insertion genes.

As to the retention of the wine by the rape victims? Highly unlikely. Some of the Auralian soldiers who were killed might have had some on them, but that would have wound up in a lab, not the black market.

Post-Embassy I'm sure the Joy Juice has hit the Earth's black market, and inside the Purple etc subculture will eventually result in more powerful children. As well as a bit of a baby boom, intended or not, among the general population.

I had a thought late last night: the Halfers on One World with their self-breeding, when they get their hands on WotG and figure out that it does chromesome mix and match, it's going to be "Well, we have thousands of 210 Withiones born to Halfer mothers and unnamed fathers. Tests show no identifiable maternal genetics. Now what?"

matapampamuphoff on September 4th, 2019 07:23 pm (UTC)
Keep in mind that the chromosome being selected for are just the six pairs with the insertions, and X and Y with power genes. All the non-insertion Chromosomes--16 pairs--are ignored except to fix some known damaging genes.

Because the One power gene is a recessive, a lot of Halfer women have a single copy. Ebsa's mom, for instance, and can thus have a 50% chance of producing a Oner son with any man, Multitude, Native, Halfer or Oner, althogh the more insertions she has, the more likely she's got the "reject less powerful sperm" gene.

All of which is to say, there will always be a lot of maternal input, but not always half. But a halfer, or Multiude etc, could have a child with all of the insertion chromosomes from the father(s) and just half of the other genes from herself.

I may need to fiddle with the parts of Kaat where Harp's genetics are discussed. And mention later that they'd pegged her as a Oner spy from Harp's genetics, and worked to not let her know that they were on to her.

By the way, Mandy is a girl's name that any boy would object to, unless he is gay. How about calling him Manny?

Excepting Mandy Patinkin, of course.

These sound like the witch theme naming scheme. They're in Holland. Perhaps Germanic first names or Greek for the boy as his mother is from Crete.
