Working on covers . . .
Less realistic, more eyecatching?

Definitely more eyecatching, but if you want to convey "Portal/Gate" you've lost it again, as a near-pure starscape even the "gate" element comes across as more of a star than a gate IMNSHO.

Maybe go back to the larger gate intersecting with the ground of the outdoors-y foreground-background, with a large gate nearly the width of the cover, with the stars forming a background inside the ring of the gate (again, taking up much of the available space, so the gate itself forms an outer ring)? (Yes, I know I keep pushing for something visible through the gate, even though Peter sees the fog, maybe make the bit of the gate over whatever is visible partially-transparent rather than replacing it entirely?)

Like it!
I like this version much better. Since I've been reading your drafts, having the tent on the cover made sense to me, but in order to catch the eye of a first time reader, I think this should be more effective.

Re: Like it!
Realistically a first time reader will be hopelessly lost if they start with book 42 in a series no matter what the cover is.

Re: Like it!
I get a surprising number of comments from people who start late in the series, and claim to have no trouble following the stories. People who don't read SF/F might be lost, but hard core SF readers have no problem.

I know it doesn't look like a gate anymore, but it's awesome. The other one didn't gel properly. It looked like a cut and paste collage. This one is more professional.

The tent before was distracting. man vs gate...mystery. Looks good.
