I like it!

Can you invert it, make the Gate the main image, with the campsite in the middle?

Not that I have any idea what you could use as background for the gate.

Since we can’t see through the gate does this mean we have dimensional powers?

cover is looking good
though I haven't seen anything about a tent in the snippets released so far. presume it will happen

Re: cover is looking good
The chap who can read cursive probably has a tent (stated to be camping).

But in any case a cover has to give the idea, perfect accuracy is not required.

Re: cover is looking good
A cover has to signal genre and entice the people who will like it to take a second look.

And frankly, most of the people who will buy it have already read most of my other books, so I could probably just slap a title and author on a blank and get nearly as many sales. But where's the fun in that?

RE: Re: cover is looking good
Move the gate three feet from the man, making it bigger and put generic skyscrapers in it, so it's clearly another world on the other side? Or maybe the other way 'round: generic gritty urban outside, large close energy ring framing pristine nature scene?

There's something about the scale between trees and gate as they are that's bugging me, but I don't know what. I think gate needs to be forward or smaller or something, my brain says it's about three stories tall and way far away. Or maybe it needs to be lower in the scene?

Re: cover is looking good
Oh, interesting. If you think of the gate as a little more than person-sized, and up close, it's okay, but there is a tendency to shift it (mentally) back into the plane of the hills and trees, in which case it is enormous, and far away. Not sure how to counteract that... a nearby branch going behind it?

RE: Re: cover is looking good
On another look, I think it's because there are trees at a distance visible under it.

Re: cover is looking good
Ah, yes. Between his legs and on either side under the gate, we see field running out to trees. So maybe if it the gate was brought down to cover some of the field? Perspective is tricky!

Apart from the lack of camping in the story so far, it's fine. What, you don't have one readily available of a man falling out of the ceiling? What kind of limited pockets do you have?
matapampamuphoff on March 14th, 2019 01:50 am (UTC)
Which, quite apart from most of them being Youtube, and of unknown copyright status, would give the impression that the book is a humorous handyman story.

Here's the start of the framing story, for those who missed it.

Well, true. But it seems as if having a person falling from the ceiling... take a generic person (dressed appropriately), preferably falling already. There's a pile of person falling from sky pictures out there, one of them might work? Now, put them in a picture with ceiling. Voila! Person falling from ceiling? (says the guy who is not going to be doing the photo editing...)

Don't agree
This is a collection of stories. The falling from the ceiling is just one of them. I think the cover is just fine .I think the gate needs to be larger, but that's opinion not a business comment. Read Sarah Hoyt's comments on covers and the concepts for creating them.
This one will show up well at the default Amazon display size of 1.5x3 (aprox). It signals genre, SF/Fantasy, with more to the SF side. It has room for title and author. It is vaguely intriguing as is. Seems like it hits all the main requirements.

Re: Don't agree
Sorry, didn't mean to upset anyone. Just playing with that notion of how do you get a picture of someone falling from the ceiling. As you say, this cover seems as if it does the job pretty well. In fact, the gate has a nice bright eye-catching quality that might make it a good thread for future covers.

Re: Don't agree
Not a problem. Even when I don't agree with comments, they make me think, and quite often I make changes that greatly improve the story or the cover. Look at how much better the final _Stone_ cover is.

I'm fiddling with a larger gate and a background with more depth. I'll put it up in a few days.

I'm fiddling with a larger gate that touches the grass, and a background with more depth. I'll put it up in a few days.
