What do I do . . .
 . . . with a prophet?

Poor man's gone from a losing battle, a life threatening injury, recovery and  . . . here he is in a future with no no obvious job for himself.

Can I have him sit and write his memoirs until I need him for something?

Send him on a tour of Empire worlds? Have him as a roving plenipotentiary?

Have him sit in Council, tour the Military or anywhere else the President is having trouble? Turn him lose on the war party?

My favorite: Have him head a task force about expanding genetic engineering.

Short story about him getting educated. How young does he look? Maybe going to Directorate school incognito?

Short story about him catching up with the old gods? Playing poker. He could even become one. Lol.

Ok, in rough order that I think of them....

1. Go see all the "Left Behind" folks that are still available. They might have been friends at the time of stranding, or might still have some bad associations. (but the Old Gods have had a long time to get over that....)

2. Take an interest in the alternate One (because it would be almost overwhelming curiosity about "the other version of myself". )

3. Run screaming from evidence of the public subconscious. Become an explorer (again) to get far away?

4. Take up arms against the cyborgs. Nicholas and Xen fighting together? What might happen when Xen's archetype runs into Lucky Dave's archetype for an extended visit? (Which one becomes more outrageous?) I'm assuming the Cyborgs have a pretty overwhelming advantage in total population and production capability, so it won't be an even fight. (another example of #3)

5. Like many a previous Elder Statesman, become the president of a big university. (that might be the equivalent of writing his memoirs, too.)

6. Run for President against Izzo?

Embassy-based Ambassador-at-Large would give him cover for learning modern politics (& he could do some distance-learning from The Empire University [or whatever it's called], under a pseudonym, for some of the other catching up he needs).

It would also let him familiarize himself more specifically with Disco, "Young One", Tyrant's World, "Young Nicholas, Davos, & Lucky Dave".

He might be able to leverage his contacts with the Comet Fall Old Gods & Arrival's Charlie Alpha.

Being on Embassy when Orde trys to make the Council Disco serves into functional interdimensional body might let Orde leverage Nicholas' authority & historical while trying to get the One Empire's into paying more than lip-service, & then using their involvement to coerce the Warmonger Earth's into actually paying attention.

Most of which however could be equivalent to "Writing his memoirs" (which he probably should also do, being a new primary source), so you could just give him cameos when needed to show what he's up to.

I think you can sideline him for at least a bit. Now that he's not constantly falling asleep, a bit of downtime with his family seems quite approriate. Get caught up with the kids, meet the grandkids, some alone time with his wife - all that normal-petson stuff. Then he can start on memoirs - or if he is resuming military duty, start familiarizing himself with tech, organization, personnel, etc. in the Oner military.

Combined with the changed threat picture from the last part, that could be a good excuse for a new bodyguard for Nicholas, freeing up Lucky Dave
So much of Nicholas' life can be All of which can behappening off-scene. Just my $0.02 worth.

If you don't need him for anything, he's got a wife and kids to catch up with, a daughter-in-law to meet, grandkids, old friends and enemies . . . which could lead to him being convenient to any shenanigans requiring a prophet for the next few years.
"Well, I was on my way back home from visiting Charlie and Rebecca, and just happened to be on Embassy when . . ."

Moving with his wife to Ash for an indefinit time.
Growing wine or apples or something.
Think about outcry on the One world.
"A prophet living among barbarians"

Maybe helping out Nil with his school.
Giving lessons for the local military.
"Application of magic in guerrilla warfare."

What about teaching a “history the way it really was” class? Which ought to stir up plenty of things...

You have duplicate Nicolases and Deadly Dees.
Do we get duplicate memoirs?

I think both One Worlds need an Inspector-General to infuse more rule-of-law and other Warrior virtues.

for motivation
If your going to write about what he is up to...

Start him off at the Old Gods Poker game....

What are they up to? He's fresh from a war isn't he perfect to fight Cyborgs?
