Extraneous thought

Don't mind me, I'm just having a forehead slapping morning.

All the trouble I have my dimensionally able people have looking through gates? All they need is a camera or phone with a screen. Point it at the gate, look at the screen. "Eep! a car coming straight at me!"

For the folks from Comet Fall, it rather makes sense with it being a problem up through sometime between "Empire of the One" and "Embassy." Since then, yeah, good point.

For the Oners, I think it was a different story until recently. From what you've written so far, it seems most (excepting those who've worked with Disco) don't realize that gates appears foggy to the dimensionally able. So when a dimensionally able Oner first encounters the fog, they don't necessarily realize it is them and not what others see. Once that becomes clear to them, yeah, the camera solution makes a lot of sense.

You can work in a child making that comment and do reactions from the people who hear it.

Give THEM thier own face slappn moment

Mirrors?
They don't actually see the gate energies with their eyes, right?

Would a mirror not work? Binoculars? Prisms? Anything that makes the gate viewing second hand? What if they look cross-eyed at the gate to confuse their brain? Or use those old red/blue 3d glasses?

Re: Mirrors?
Now that's an interesting question. They can not-see the inbetween, and I believe I had Xen once say something about if he shut down and completely shielded, he could see through the gates.

So I'll say it's part of the dimensional talent.

With binoculars they'd still be facing the energy. With a mirror, they'd be looking to the side at the angled mirror. So that should work.

Meh. Just blame old policies from electromagnetic interference from the powered gates. Not like the people riding horses would bring it up.

I think you're covered, the realization that a camera gets around the problem first requires the realization that the problem is caused by dimensional abilities/magic.

The only Oner I recall previously being mentioned as aware of the issue is whoever it was that met with Paer's mother (Ebsa?) when she mentioned she can't see through the gates, if they have been assuming it's common knowledge...

In the last 14 years teaching grad students in information science, I have had exactly one who took a look at a PowerPoint slide with teeny-tiny type on it and pulled out his tablet, turned on the camera, and hit expand to read. Everyone else has just griped about why didn’t I use a bigger font. Frankly, given that most of the magic people are not terribly technical, I don’t think it is at all odd that they didn’t think about using a mechanical or electronic aid. Actually, having someone else look through and describe it, or even having a pet look through and borrowing their eyes... those seem more likely. Of course, you could have a Gordi (or whatever his name was) with a special visor to let them see...

Forehead slapping
Is a forehead slapping moment anything like a Monty Python Fish Slapping Dance?
