Transport Grid

There. A bit less distance.

Thank you. This helps clarify things. Based upon the story to date, should we assume a 50 kilometer spacing to this grid?

Yep. 50km grid, more or less. They don't worry about perfect spacing, and barely touch down, toss and go.

Cali threw off their routine, and they jumped down south, away from whatever the heck had flashed through.

So they arrived about noon on Day One.

In the north, Xen found Cali and took her home.

During that same half-day the other four walked toward Karl's forest fire smoke signal. Give or take terrain obsticals. Sam, Connor and Jerry met up, either late, or more likely in the morning and moved further north.

Day two--Xen found Mike, who was plodding along toward the smoke signal. They spent the night on a hill, and spotted the other three late morning on Day Three.

They back track and camp at sundown when Karl rejoins them.

Day four--Walked all day with frequent breaks. They camp and Xen goes on to get water and check on/reassure Cali and Jiol. Jogged back just in time to kill the bear just before dawn.

Day five--Exhausted city boys stagger the last 15 kilometers to the tree house.

So, basically, two half days and three whole days to travel roughly 200 kilometers-124 miles. A long exhausting walk, even though all the city boys are in general good health and reasonably fit. With Karl and Xen each cruising off to fetch water and bring it back.

Xen and Karl going out to fetch the newest Transportees? "OMG! What to you want to bet they ran all the way there?"

Being picky again, but shouldn't Karl be farther away from Xen than Sam?

No. Karl's gone west to light forest fires just below the tree line. Once he's sure he's got one going good, where it will burn for a few days, he comes back down to the plains.

Sam walked north while Karl was still a good ways up hill. So Xen and Mike, walking south, actually found the other three just before Karl got to them.

It is a plausible scenario. I would still expect all the city boys walking barefoot to have more or less serious foot injuries by the time they staggered into the tree house. Unless maybe Xen has been casting healing spells on their feet.

The crack about Xen and Karl running all the way to the new transportees is clever. And since they did not bring them all the way back, no one in camp really knows how far the new transportees had to walk.

The bare feet had occurred to me, so I had Xen take a bunch of rabbit skins with him. No doubt the final version will have them bitching about the clumsy excuses for footwear.

Oh, yeah. I love it when the city boys bitch about the poor accommodations. As if they had a clue.

But I was enjoying hearing the old song whistling in the back of my brain! 500 miles, 500 miles, yes, I'm 500 miles away from home... you can hear the whistle blowing a hundred miles... huh, I think I conflated a couple songs there, but... 50 kilometers, huh. Well, I guess if people are going to pick round numbers...

All the worry about gallons of water with a stream running down the middle.

Yes. Any boy scout would have said "To heck with the forest fire, I'm walking down hill to find water."
