_Black Point Clan_ Alternate Cover
Quick and dirty . . . Something cleaner . . . apart form getting a little carried away with sprkly things.

It's called BP Clan, but there's only one guy there. Its a bit generic. Not sure it says anything relating to the story. Story features lots of people, perhaps wine glasses for parties, and politics. Train pulling into station? Perhaps a man's head superimposed on a unicorn head?

It’s ok though I’m kind of fond of the rolling down the hill fighting cover. Even if a number of people didn’t remember the scene. But if you aren’t going with that one this is a good alternate.

a bit off topic, but I've been watching the Olympics too much. What does available magic do to snow sports? You've done a whole story about horses and competition. What would a hard shield do to the skates? or just to have a streamlined shape for speed-skating? I seem to remember some talk of shields and sledding down the hill, would it work better for skis or snowboard if you carefully put the shield on the bottom side of your board?

How would you detect it to insure fairness? Guess you have to have watchers to detect an active spell or shield if you're worried about cheating. Heck, even Speed would make it easier to run slalom and downhill, and I don't know how you'd tell.

Might have to make different categories? Magic and non-magic instead of men and women.

Speaking of finding a blind spot in all your work--a couple weeks ago I'm all "Oh! Winter Olympics!" And I suddenly realized that on this ice age world I have not once mentioned skiing, ice skating . . . in fact I don't remember a snow man or a snowball fight.

52, 53 stories? And I've skipped winter in every single one of them!!!!!

Yeah, shields are very low friction, so there would be issues with getting too fast for turns, not enough traction for turns and so forth. I think control might be difficult.

So Ice skating would require smooth ice. I don't think you've described any cases where lakes or even ponds freeze over (because most of your stories tend to have hot springs nearby?) On the other hand, Nordic skiing would work fine out on the plains while following the cross continental road. But then you'd have to do something about the horses....

Oh boy, I just had a vision of the Old Dun walking on top of the snow with magic snowshoes.....

You haven't entirely skipped winter, merely allowed the main characters to mostly avoid it. The main characters mostly get out of the worst of it. No snowball fight or snowmen, though. You've at least referenced snowballs, though.

In "Rumors" in _A Taste of Wine_ Damien's efforts sent the Oner Recovery Team into the north for an entire winter, from which they finally returned in April with frostbite. Elsewhere, Damien sent people and horses out the farm when winter descends. In _Growing Up Magic_ Damien tells Staven "Tell me about the snowball fight you had with Nazar and Martin."

In _Young Warriors_, Xen and company found relief from the cold by stepping through the corridor from the chill of the impending Karista winter to the baking warmth of Havwee, only to return for duty with the King's Own during the "Winter Season." Later he returns to Ash for more training, during which Gisele threatens to find some snow for him to shovel. Garit and Tanner Trick are worried about snow and ice on the way up Fort Stag. They get snowed in for a bit with the witches at the Fire Mountain Inn.

There is a snowstorm on campus in Trouble in Paradise and Ebsa mentions skis and snowshoes.

Mages at Large and Sea Wolves too
