_Black Point Clan_
So . . . should I put BPC in the Directorate series, or the main series?

I'll get Last Merge out real soon now, and then polish up _Nowhere Man_ and _Black Point Clan_ and publish them RSN.

I think it has to be main
I really dont see much connection to the Directorate series. So unless you are going to start a whole new series branching from Fiend's story in the Main featuring Ajha and his crew, i think it has to be main. And while i think i would really enjoy that series, trying to keep the those stories in tune with the published materiel would probably be a nightmare for you.

Re: I think it has to be main
No kidding. I have enough trouble just with two. But a "Tales of Empire" Omnibus for all the rest of the Oner stories is probably going to happen.

Character time
The amount of time Paer, Ebsa, R'ad, Nighthawk are the main focus of the story seems to be your historical Directorate plot focus. If their development isn't the point then its a Main Line story....well or a tangent.

So far the Directorate has focused on Ebsa, Paer, Ra'd and to a lessor degree Nighthawk and the rest of the school group. Since BPC is more One World focused, but not including the "Directorate Team" (like Dancer and Rael), it feels more main line. If it had happened after Directorate School, I could see Olympian being Directorate. Or a detailed but likely not worth the time story on Team 13's adventures recovering the last of the students. But not Black Point Clan.

Could be either since if the key is Izzo becoming a Director, then it's Directorate /and/ a prequel to External Relations and Gods and Princesses

I think those are Directorate unless Izzo gets his own series

Last Merge might be better if The Eldon thread were moved to Nowhere Man and merely (mostly) summarized.

I agree that the two stories don't feel like they mesh. The cross over outlaw, mainline and Directorate pov characters are all strong characters and that makes me ask who's story it is. Its trying to do a lot in one book. Who is best pov character for which part? Should they be two separate books? Possibly minimise Xen pov if you want it to be Directorate. Eldon has little to do with Xen and the others except at the climax. Is there going to be one on searching for people on the new Helios planet? That would be Directorate.

I originally wrote it with _Shadow Zone_ in there too. Couldn't get them together for the grand finale, so it took it out, leaving great gaping holes in both.

Bah. Bad enough to tell the same war twice, three times would definitely be overkill. Or worse, tedious.

Now on to get _Nowhere Man_ and _Black Point Clan_ out the door.

Black point would definitely be mainline. Aija has been in mainland books before. I'd put the focus of the Directorate books on Ebsa's crowd because that generation is who I expect to see if I purchase one of those books.

Hmm, I think mainline. While it is focused on Ahja and Izzo and both of them are associated with the Directorate the other stories featurin* either of them have so far been mainline. Look at the short story where Ahja and a Fean meet the xdim criminals. You made that mainline.

Directorate is the YA protags growing up.

BPC is the older, politically active bunch. Same as Empire. Xiat's past sixty, Ajha's older, IIRC.

Mainline, One subbranch. If it were in Directorate, we'd expect the younger generation.

My $.02 worth.

Since "Black Point Clan" features the conclusion to the dueling Philosophers problem that has largely been in the mainline novels ("Rael" and "Flying") the conclusion should probably be in the mainline, as well.

One could argue that since the main characters are all employed by the Directorates, it could be a Directorate novel. So far those stories have been focused on Ebsa, Paer, Ra'd, and Nighthawk, even if Ajha has played a part in 3 of the 7 stories published so far. That might confuse or annoy some readers, who might expect any "Directorate" series story they purchase to be focused on them.

Have you thought about adding a timeline for the books? It could be added to the end of the books as they are published. Something like the one on Louis Bujold's page. I can't send the link or your machine thinks I'm a robot.

Pam has published her timeline several times on he livejournal.

What I'm thinking of is a tool that tracks the main life events of key characters and which books they happen in.
