_Last Merge_ Xen action

Works better from Rael's PO V

"Well, maybe after we've saved the World."

Two days later they packed up and headed home.

Rael took the wheel of the lead ute and Xen joined her.

"We'll know in two months if it did any good." Q climbed into Ohhe's ute. "Drop us off at the staging area. I'll close the gate to here, then we'll take one of the other gates back to Embassy."

They drove through the gate, back to the rocky barren world.

Xen looked over at her. "So I'll see you in two months, Spikey. Go report, we'll close this gate, and get ourselves home." He hopped out of her ute and blew her a kiss.

The witches waved to the Teamers and headed for the third gate. Two more gates and three corridors to Embassy, according to Ibis.

Rael drove through the gate that was the first link back to the One World, then turned hard and parked. Leaped out and ran back to the gate. Warped light as as soon as the last ute was through, she jumped.

Xen was walking back toward the gate to the X World.

"Xen!" Q followed, sounded exasperated. "What are you doing?"

"What I do best. Spying. I'll go see if Helaos are feeling the earthquakes, on their side of the Helios, and if they realize that something is being done to them. And if they're going to track down our gates."

"And then what are you going to do?"

"Depends." Xen plucked off the bubble holding the Great Stone Inn and stuck it on her shoulder. "So I can teleport further. Go hold the fort."

"If you're not back in a week, I'll come see if you need rescuing."

"See you in a week. On Embassy. I'll close this gate, and make my own when it's time to go."

She shook her head and followed the other witches.

Xen stepped through to the X World and walked away from the gate . . . Sighed. "I should have known you'd follow me."

Rael giggled and let her light warp go. "Of course. So let's go see what the Helaos are up to."

He touched her shoulder and pushed her back a bit. She stumbled back over a rough surface in a shadowed room.

"It's easier to deal with minor discrepancies in momentum if you're taking a step when you teleport." He flashed a grin. "Just in case you ever figure it out."

"Humph." Her quick retort died as she got a good look at the room . . . "Tell me those aren't . . . people . . . who merged with . . . walls?" She edged closer to the holes in the outer wall and looked out . . . and down.

"Helaos. Waiting in vane for some people to merge with. There must have been a building here, with a close congruence, otherwise it probably wouldn't have stayed standing."

Rael looked down at the floor, random high and low areas. "The floors weren't at the same height."

"No, so they warped to merge."

She gazed at the people shaped marks on the crumpled wallboard. Both adult-sized, thank the One.

"The whole world is like this. The people who didn't believe, who wouldn't evacuate. They're all still here." Xen walked to the outside wall. "See the big dark cubic buildings? Those are the magnetics centers. We think they both cause and control the speed of the merge."

"They have a lot in common with the powered gates. Counter-rotating superconducting rings carrying huge electric charges and shearing magnetic fields. They run them in pairs, starting with a few opening a small shadow zone. Then they extend the zone by turning on pairs of magnetics that are off each end of the zone."

Rael nodded. "I've read your report. You sabotaged one that was starting to spin up, delaying the extension."

"Yes, and I'll do a more thorough job of it, this time. I have bombs in bubbles. One hour on the timers. I've experimented at home. I can shove the bomb into the wall of the containment and anchor it on the other side. It should be undetectable there. Unless the magnetic fields pop the bubble. Unfortunately I'll need to be within a mile of the bubble to pop it . . . and trust the bomb to be operational after an hour in a very thin nitrogen atmosphere at cryogentic temperatures."

"Umm . . . "

"Yeah. So I'm going to sneak into that one tonight and see about placing the bomb." He cleared his throat. "I hope you don't spook easily, because I'd appreciate a heads up if a bunch of people suddenly show up armed to the teeth at the center down there."

Rael looked over her shoulder at the images . . . Just images, not real bodies, even though they really are real dead bodies . . . "Sure. No problem."

Unrelated question
If I have a suggestion for a previously posted story part (eg. 2015) do you want it posted under the section it refers to, under the current posting, on FaceBook?

It will be interesting to see how well these two Heroes/predators/warriors fit their fighting and skulking styles with each others.

Re: Unrelated question
Post it under that entry, so I have context. _I'll_ see it as a New Message, but I suspect no one else will.

So I was just looking at a news report about some abandoned housing in Detroit, and at the red hot market in Seattle and thinking "can't I just bubble that up and move it to... oh, that's fiction. damn."

So, um, what's that thing we used to say in Lois's form on Baen? Write faster? no, I think it was WLW.

Or a corridor from the vicinity of San Francisco to Detroit. "Own your own home here for less than the cost of renting a hovel in San Fran!"

Much the same effect as telecommunting will have in the Real World.

Then think of the collapse of housing prices in several dense population areas with gates to "suburb worlds"
