_Cooking Hot_ part 18
Needs trasitions and so forth . . .

:: Oooo Weee! Look at the studs! ::

Ebsa looked over his shoulder, starled . . . and even more startled to see nothing but a trio of loose horses.

:: Twelve of them, each prettier than the last! ::

:: Oooo! Look at the mane on that one!! ::

:: And muscles. What is it about black stallions . . ."

A laugh from Ra'd. "Shut your mouth, Eb. Flame, they're all geldings. You and your buddies would find them very disappointing."

The chesnut snorted. :: Figures. ::

The bay tossed her head. :: We can fix that. ::

The palominos nodded. :: Free them from bondage! ::

Ebsa swallowed. "But I'm sure you'd like to see them all dance first. Right."

The mares perked their ears up as the guards circled just a bit.

They stuck their noses together and all communication was in eartwitches and nods.

Paer was snickering. "Oh Ebsa, the look on your face! I told you they were telepathic. Didn't you believe me? I want an import permit so badly, but Xen says the smart horses aren't property, and that one would be lonely . . . until some scientist decided to dissect him."

"Ouch! Yeah. And with all the genetic engineering, would they even be allowed in shows? I don't know the rules . . . " He watched Ra'd walking up to the chesnut mare and vaulting aboard. No bridle, no saddle.

Paer bit her lip. "I don't, either. Guess i ought to find out."

They watched the guards trott off, following Ra'd.

"Paer . . . should we go talk to Wolfson about this? I mean . . . "

She started giggling. "A diplomatic crisis when a gang of Comet Fall mares liberate the Black Horse Guard Drll Team horses!"

They were still laughing when they walked up the Disco steps.

"Xen says the smart horses aren't property"

Good for Xen, however from the fact that the God of Thieves broke a group of smart horses out to have an adventure in "God of the Sun", I assume that that is not the general Comet Fall attitude.

Re: Property
Those were Damien's horses. And while the quarter or so of the magic community who can hear the horses agree, 99% of the general population would think he was crazy.

The issue has never been raised, legally.

Poor Xen. He is seeing more and more of Ebsa lately. :D Mind you this is amusing as Ebsa is one of the very best examples of free range oner you can find. The philosopher of Justice. Heh, sit him down with Will for a drink.

"a trio of loose horses."

From the sound of things, quite loose indeed. ;)

Spread a bit wide aren't we?
Seems like this story is kinda meanderin' around collecting pieces and not really going anywhere specific with no end in sight. There are so any strings dangling that it is getting a bit confusing for anyone who has not read the entire series.

Or this may just be the way you work in which case I will keep my mouth shut and enjoy the writing.

Re: Spread a bit wide aren't we?
This is just a fun story, and setting up potential disasters for the Fair. Now it's just doodling around six stories in advance of where I'm publishing. Whether it'll stay an amusing short story, or get woven in as a distraction from a more serious main thread will mostly depend on me finding a big problem on Embassy.

And while I often snippet finished drafts for comments, right now this is getting posted right after I write it, so there's a vague goal, but not an actual plot involved.

Re: Spread a bit wide aren't we?
Let Ebsa misinterpret those thoughts first.

:: Oooo Weee! Look at the studs! ::
:: Twelve of them, each prettier than the last! ::
:: Yeah and these shiny coats! ::

Ebsa tried to ignore the girl talk and thought that high society women should knew better than to leak their admiration like that.

:: Oooo! Look at the mane on that one!! ::
:: And muscles. What is it about black stallions? ::
:: It's a shame they don't let us near Jet or Phantom. ::

"Waaait" he stopped dead in his tracks ",are they hot for the horses???"

He looked over his shoulder, startled . . . and even more shocked to see nothing but a trio of loose horses.

I agree that was pretty good improve and really writing is improv writ large. :)

Re: Spread a bit wide aren't we?
Thanks for the praise but there are two reason why I'm not starting writing on my own:

I'm okay with detail work, but useless with the big overall structure.
That's not only here, but also in other fields where I contribute.

English is only my second language.
Paying the editors and proof readers to make the story coherent would cost me much much more than could earn with any book.

And since I'm no millionaire, I keep doing what I like most:
Tinkering with with your stories and nagging you with ideas. ;-)

All my ideas and thoughts posted here are of course free for you to use.
No royalties, thanks, name mentioning etc. needed.

Re: Spread a bit wide aren't we?
Writing is how you improve both of those.

At the absolute base level, story structure is:

(1) A character or characters
(2) A problem that matters to the characters
(3) How they solve the problem
(4) The characters after they have dealt with the problem

Then you "just" fill in the details

smart horses
I can't wait until the Old Dun decides he wants his own world.
(Anonymous) on January 18th, 2018 02:23 am (UTC)
That's the problem on Embassy! The horses want to be classed as sentients not slaves. If they have dimensional talent then they would be a hot commodity. The Old Gods would remember being enslaved to make gates. Would Xen consider them coming under protection of Disco? Ebsa's minion can work on legals.
(Anonymous) on January 19th, 2018 04:47 am (UTC)
If they could not do anything about the God of the Sun even after he was recaptured off of the embassy grounds, they probably cannot do anything about slavery on Comet Fall. On the other hand, it will be a great club for the One World to beat on Comet Fall with diplomatically. I suspect that there will be legal changes in the Kingdom of the West very soon. What to do about back pay should be interesting especially with Damian.
(Anonymous) on January 19th, 2018 09:31 am (UTC)
What if another non human sentient race shows up? Perhaps Neanderthals who are enslaved by humans? Or centaurs?
ekuah on January 19th, 2018 11:08 am (UTC)
Or a colony of goat people.
A.k.a. the children of goat and sex change spell victims.

Would it be ethical to turn them back to humans?
Maybe even against their consent?

Neandertals were human too, just not 'modern' humans.

It's curious that you guys write Neanderthals with a 'th'.
Because the first remains of them were found in the Neander valley.
(valley = Tal in German)

(Anonymous) on January 19th, 2018 04:05 pm (UTC)
The discovery of the first Neanderthal specimen in 1856 predated both German unification and a 1901 standardization of German spelling, and entered the English-speaking scientific literature with the older "thal" spelling but a "tal" pronunciation. Here in America, the high school science teachers I had pronounced the "h", while the college professors did NOT pronounce the "h".

I know they were very human. We've got around 3% of their genes. But, people being people, some racist supremicists could easily decide otherwise and use them for their own fun and profit. Both Neanderthals and elves exist in Pam's verse. I can just see Judge Michaelson arguing about what makes a sapient being.
ekuah on January 19th, 2018 02:28 pm (UTC)
I can totally see that 'But, people being people, some racist supremacists could easily decide otherwise'

Some of Pam's worlds are more or less 100% copies of our world.
Just with minor difference that we haven't been discovered by disco yet. ;-)

And when I see what some racist do here (just for the reason that the the melanin contend of their skin differs slightly from someone else's), I can totally imagine what some people might do to other hominids.

And even if it doesn't differ, just the label 'Natives' was enough for Warmonger Earth to deprive them of their rights.

But on the other hand, as soon as the alt-Neandertals developed technology too, we 'modern human' would be screwed. Because those Neandertal were tough.
ekuah on January 19th, 2018 05:21 pm (UTC)
Pam, another question:
How magic are the smart horses?

The spells I know some of them can perform are:
Illusion (at least the old Dun can that)

But what about the more nefarious spells?
Like Transformation, Sex Change etc.

Why I am asking:
I had a thought on my way home.
What would happen if one of the cooking contestants have horse meat on the menu? (like that ridiculous 'Steamed horse leg in mint sauce from purple' that I mentioned way back)

I bet that could be a recipe for disaster.
matapampamuphoff on January 20th, 2018 01:58 am (UTC)
Re: Pam, another question:
you know, I've sort of styled my future Earth after a worst case "One World Government" developing from the UN with a strong European leftists clique. I could see a French Chef cooking horsemeat.

Poor Earth! You'd think I'd have made them the good guys!

And the Evil Empire of the One! What happened?

Oh. My twisted subconscious. Never. Mind.

Re: Pam, another question:
I think part of it is that on the One world and Comet Fall what you first see may not be what is. On original Earth if there is no immediate deterrence(eg. armed or the Hulk) it is presumed to be safe to attack another. On One and Comet Fall the little old black man may be an ordinary person or Harry, the pretty girl may be a multitude or a princess. One is relatively safe to attack. The other is instant hurt or death. No way to tell without careful investigation. It makes for more cautious evaluation of potential victims. Also both One and Comet Fall allow dueling so insulting behavior may end up in a public arena with the possibility of death, injury, and humiliation. Again a cautionary precept against instant view and attack.
As these are cultural they only apply more or less to any individual of these cultures.
