_Cooking Hot_ part 17
Paer glanced at him, then pulled him aside. "Ebsa . . . people keep saying things . . . When I look through the gate it's a little foggy. Just enough that I wasn't sure which horse that was. What do you see?"

Ebsa eyed her. "It clear and sharp. No fog at all . . . "

They all dodged as Baron leaped through the gate, bucking and kicking.

Paer was giggling. "I brought Crystal and Raccio here and, well, I didn't use the Embassy gate, I used one of the rarely used hub gates and got them both used to them. Silly, really, when They'll never need to go through gates."

Yfda looked over at her. "That's a good idea. We'll trot them around here so they see the ground and we plan out the pattern we'll use. Then we'll go find a different gate and get the poor critters used to it."

A laugh from Ra'd. "There are other gates here, if you want to practice without an audience. There's a Maze entrance to the northwest."

Paer perked up. "I've heard about that. When the Fallen figured out how to make their gates, they couldn't figure out how to close them. So they made a maze of thirty some gates and corridors to slow pursuit before they came and spied on us. Embassy is one of the Worlds they discovered and used."

"There's thirty worlds out there . . . just . . ."

"Really? I hadn't heard that." A stranger . . . or rather not. The distinct reddish tones of his skin and dark hair marked him as a . . . well, Tick Tock, because most people couldn't manage the language at all.

Ebsa nodded politely. "Subdirector." Urk! Must practice his name!

Paer grinned and shook his hand. "Congratulations, Subdirector !Tok." She integrated a deep roof of the mouth tok seemlessly with the rest. "Are you still involved with your Olympic Equestian Teams? Or I suppose you're too busy."

!Tok laughed. "I'm surprised you remember me, since I wasn't one of the riders."

"No, but you told me all about the horses." Paer grinned. "Am I remembering right that that was your nephew who took the Individual Silver?"

"Yep. Ten years ago and he's still Grandmother's favorite on the strength of it. We bagged our first Gold two years ago." A quick grin. "But then we didn't have to beat you."

Paer sighed. "One of these days . . . years . . . I'll get back to riding regularly."

!Tok nodded. "And your horse bubbled." He eyed the black horses. "I actually came to check out how much room the cook-off booth will have. Izzo told me I had to learn to delegate these minor tasks. I told him any excuse to get away from the desk . . ."

Paer giggled. "Let me show you. The Disco people taped things off and argued about how much space was needed for each, so these spots aren't set in stone . . . "

Ebsa followed them out and the Black Horse Guards, having gotten their dozen mounts through the gate, came out as well to examine the ground.

Oooh, !Tok of "Why does Izzo want a fully functional skunk? LET'S GO SEE." fame. This promises embarrassing hilarity.

After Izzo cleans house at External Relations Directorate, He replaces a bunch of his subdirectors. !Tok is now the subdirector of Homestead.

Kid #2 is reading The Directorate Omnibus. (13 year old). I clued him in with "Okay, Xen is Wolfgang's son, and Nighthawk is Wolfgang's grand daughter, and One world is where the Orange team landed" and a bit of the war history before Orange team got there, and he was off. At Chapter 12 of Trouble in Paradise right now, three days of reading in.

So, uh, this is where I beg for more paper books, right? He wants to know more about the world eating other worlds . . .

P.S. I'm sure #1 will get to it, probably over summer: he's having adventures in private high school since he intends to skip college in favor of ballet, and tends to be asleep whenever he's not doing homework or ballet. I think he managed all of half of Atlantis+ over break, when he woke up to refuel!

After I get _Last Merge_ out, I should do Helios Omnibus.

Cannibal World, Surveillance, Fort Dinosaur, Shadow Zone, and Last Merge.

Or perhaps first, a Wine of the Gods Omnibus. Black Goats, Explorers, Spy Wars and a bunch of short stories. Which would be half again as big as _The Directorate Omnibus_. Maybe I could shrink the font . . .

Holly,
If #1 intends to go ballet as a career he might wish to investigate NC School of the Arts in WInston-Salem. They have an excellent Dance school along with college level classes.
The other thing I will warn him about is to treat his knees with great care. The more surrounding muscle he can build up the less wear and tear. Most male dancers get invalided out via the knees, similar to any other pro athlete. The better he can build up the knees at an early part of his career the longer they will support him. I am paying now for not listening to my dance teachers when I was in HS. Maybe he can do better.
I hope he does well at his chosen profession. It is not the easiest path but it has compensations.
BTW: He might want to friend "Rick McCullough" in Facebook. He is a semi-retired dancer/choreographer and has been at it since the early 70s.

Thanks for the heads up. The boy is pretty serious, loves the couple-Sergiu Brindusa and Beth Moore-he trains under. He has a family 'in' at Interlochen but says he doesn't want to leave here yet. He was the Rat King in this year's Nutcracker, which is pretty cool. He only started dancing two-and-a-half years ago. He has a cousin in musical theater in NYC who hopes he will land out there-she's five years older-and share an apartment with her and they can watch each other's backs.

I'm trying to talk him into going to a big place for summer camp. So far he's not too interested. I think he's got to slow down on the growing first-6'5". All he wants to to is eat, sleep, and dance! (School, alas, is not optional.) He will graduate high school with enough credits from the local university to enroll as a sophomore if he changes his mind.

Say, do you know anyone who custom makes ballet slippers? He's maxed out what I've found to order premade, Sansha size 20. This puppy has monster paws.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Atlanta's climate appears to have been swapped with Milwaukee much to younger daughter's disgust. "Y'all are stealing my weather!" We're not used to it.
I checked the sources I used for bespoke ballet shoes but none of them are still in business. Been away too long.
