_The Boy_ the end

They filled up on lobster and shimp and rolled up to the parilla as it was closing.

Axbe swaggered in and stopped dead. Ebsa peered past him.

Chacha was sitting at one of the tables. A book in front of her. Glasses on her face.

Oh. Guess that explains a lot.

She raised her head and glared at him. "I just need them fer reading, so don't go getting rude about it."

Jorge snorted. "I remember her from school always with her nose in a book. Shoulda sent her off with the boy."

Axbe snickered. "That would have pissed off his girlfriend."

Lots of glances and frowns.

"She was nice. She bought us lunch."

A snort from Jorge. "Kissing up to a rich girl?"

"Well . . . yes. Mind you she's pretty and smart, as well as nice ." Ebsa shrugged. "That's how I knew the best place to go for Ax's eyes. So, umm, goodnight all."

Chacha looked around. "You better show up tomorrow, and give the boy more magic lessons. And find a school for him."

"You ain't off the hook, ya know."

"Ebsa? What are you going to do?"

"Oh, Paer . . . The boy has a family . . . and I'm not it. This isn't something I can walk in and take over. This is . . . well, I hope to hell I've settled some of the questions the boy has about his biofather. And a better answer than I ever got. It's . . . hard to grow up wondering if your father would love you, or hate you. Whether you'd been abandoned . . . well, I knew I was. I think he realizes that I hadn't a clue he existed. And that I like him. But I have to walk away and leave him with his parents. Even though I don't like his parents. Try to wrap this up nicely and step away." Ebsa sighed. "I didn't think I'd be like this."

"Yeah. We seem to be nothing but short episodes in kids lives these days, don't we?"

Exercises on the beach. Karate and magic. The boy seemed distant.

"So . . . what's the problem?"

"Jorge's upset. I dunno why."

"Because you're his kid. The boy he's raising. And I waltzed in from nowhere, bestowed magnificent gifts like a magic fairy, and brought down trouble like a demon, and . . . threatened his position in your life."

"He only finally married mi madre two years ago."

"Was he around before that?"

"Sure. He was always there." Axbe shrugged. "He's . . . mi papi. Until suddenly he wasn't. And I started wondering why he'd always wanted me to call him 'Jorge' and not Dad or Father or Papi . . . "

Ebsa thought that over. "Sometimes we . . . start out in a way that seems sensible at the time. Jorge, Ohje Clostuone . . . he was ambitious when he was younger. Probably thought he'd marry a Oner, have a bunch of Oner kids . . . so this kid that wasn't his, however cute the baby, however much he loved the woman . . . He may have been telling himself that he'd drop them when a suitable Oner came along, so it would be better to not be called dad or whatever."

Axbe hunched. "Huh. We weren't good enough for him."

"Well, that may be what he told himself . . . or what everyone else told him. But he never did marry someone else, did he?"

"He kicked me out. Made me go to that school."

"I think we both know that was because of the laws. Jorge purely hates the Enclave Council and the Clan leaders. And they hate him. They don't want him in the enclave."

Ebsa sighed. "I don't know what to do about your schooling, now."

They were both pretty dissatisfied as they headed back to the car.

Lunch was definitely the parilla's busiest time. Especially during Ramadan with so many restaurants closed all day long. Ebsa stuck his head in and surveyed the packed room. Maybe I'll come back in an hour or two.

He was shoved from behind. Staggered forward and sidestepped, turning, expecting to see Jorge . . . except Jorge was over there. He'd been shoved by a large man in a suit . . . with a gun . . . and a dozen friends.

Two of the newcomers stopped at the main entrance, while the rest headed for Jorge.

Quick flick of a glance. Axbe was behind the serving counter with his mother. Jorge had noticed the intruders and was starting forward in slow motion.

Ebsa realized he'd sped up without noticing, which was why the shrieks of the customers as they spotted the guns and scrambled to get away were so low toned.

There's no place for them to go!

The intruders had shoved quickly through the tables and were between the fire exit and the crowd almost before they'd been noticed.

Ebsa kept the speed, eased in a spell of mild unnoticeable. The two goons by the door kept their eyes roving and discounted him.

"So Jorge, you don't like my business proposition? Let me show you what happens to small timers like you who don't fall in line." He waved at the frozen-in-place customers. "Kill them."

Ebsa spiked his speed, hit the two at the door, straight neck chops. Scooped up the two guns as they started to fall.

Shot three gangsters as they raised their guns toward the crowd. Their slower brethren registered the attack from the door and their guns turned toward him.

Jorge punched the leader, leaped on the next man . . . was in Ebsa's line of fire . . .

No problem.

Physical shield. One foot on an abandoned chair, one foot on the table and he leaped into the midst of the suits. Knock up a fist holding a gun, smack him with the butt of a pistol. Side kick as another fired. Tumbled by the momentum of the bullet. Rolled to his feet. More gunfire.

Jorge clutching his side and staggering. A small figure flying through the air, hitting a suit. Slapped away. Axbe rolled back to his feet. Block, punch, kick. The suit was down. Atta boy!

The boss was back up, gun swinging toward Jorge . . . falling from his hands as he took one step back and fell. A boom Ebsa felt more than heard, in Speed. Chacha behind the food counter a huge old pistol held in a two handed stance . . . shaking. The customers had fled, the field was clear. Ebsa rolled through the last three gunmen standing, trying to not kill them. Tapped Axbe's victim behind the ear as he tried to get up.

"Jorge? Papi! Papi!" Axbe was hanging onto Jorge as he sagged, blood spreading across his chest.

Ebsa stepped closer, reaching for his wallet. The tiny vial he always carried. Highly illegal, this stuff. For all the wrong reasons.

He snapped the tube, dumped the liquid into Jorge's mouth, tossed the glass tube into the debris from a tipped table. Grabbed a napkin and applied pressure to the man's chest. "Breath slowly and carefully. Someone will have called an ambulance." He glanced at Chacha as she knelt beside Jorge.

She set the gun down carefully and pulled out her comm.

"So, the Al Iadrah gang had apparently taken Jorge for an ordinary Low Town businessman, and decided to make an example of him." Ox swapped disgusted glances with Puppy. "And One help us, we're going to have to hold him up as a shining example of a law abiding, kick ass, tough old Oner defending his property, shot while getting his customers safely out of the restaurant."

Uqpy growled. "Not to mention his wife killing the man running the whole of their Uruguay operation. One! I'd rather have blamed it all on you."

Ebsa grinned. "Oh, I can see that. 'Followed a Directorate Agent into a local restaurant and got their asses kicked. That would have taken the target off Jorge's back, but with fifty witnesses to their addressing Jorge by name . . . "

"It won't fly. Damn it all."

Uqpy eyed Ebsa. "You killed five of them, seriously injured five . . . "

"The leader ordered his men to kill the customers. There wasn't time to be nice about it."

Ox shrugged. "I need to go talk to the Maldonado and Montevideo prosecutors. If we can sweep up as many Al Iadrah goons up as possible on every petty charge we can come up with, maybe we can kick them out of here altogether."

Puppy looked around at the carnage. Six dead bodies still in place, the injured, including Jorge, had all been taken to the regional hospital. "And never again roll our eyes about the incredible abilities of the Warriors of the One."

Ebsa sniffed. "Don't believe everything you see in the vids. They make stuff up all the time."

Ebsa leaned on the hospital room doorway and studied the family inside.

Jorge sent a single glare his direction, then looked back at Chacha. "We will need a house outside of Low Town, I think in one of those fancy-ass gated developments in the Enclave. That way the boy will be in a good school."

And Al Iadrah will have a harder time getting to your family. Or at least you can sleep a bit better. And Chacha realizes that . . . and no doubt I just told Axbe.

"Ahora, vamoose. I need to talk to this badass biodad of yours."

Chacha bit her lip, and reluctantly stood up. "I don't want my son getting any more magic and karate lessons from someone who can kill like that! Everyone says Action Teamers are dangerous, and they're right!"

Axbe looked back and forth between them and followed her out the door. Listening in no doubt.

Ebsa closed the door behind them.

"You've changed a lot since you were fifteen. I figure you can take anything you want, now, can't you? So what are you planning, Kitchen?"

"To leave. I saw how the boy feels about you. He leaped to your defense. When you went down he was calling you Papi. He didn't spare a glance my direction."

"Yeah. You haven't got a DNA test to prove anything, and we don't need your money. So go away."

Outside, Axbe eyed him. Arms crossed, not welcoming. "Right, so you're not a coward. You can fight pretty good. Might even really be an Action Teamer. But Jorge's mi papi."

"Yes. But if he stiffs you on college tuition, let me know. Good luck, kid."

== Jorge snorted. "I remember her from school always with her nose in a book. Shoulda sent her off with the boy." ==

Jorge is what, twenty years older? so not at school at the same time.

Was he pushing drugs or employing her to do so?

Probably, but that needs modification.

Seems a shame to write the boy out of Ebsa's life so soon when the are so many adventures and opportunities for creative mayhem they could share. Also ending feels rushed.

Oh, he'll show back up. He's about a year younger than Ryol and Arno, probably wind up at the same school. Already being aimed at college . . . the Directorate School has been mentioned . . .

matapampamuphoff on October 24th, 2017 03:08 pm (UTC)
Actually he's got a cameo in _Children of a Foreign God_ of which I've even got the relevant scene posted--and which has already changed to accommodate _Lucky Dave_.

I am not sure, but in Dancer, when they arrest and release Jorge during the evidence van fiasco I thought he was a Neartuone. This could be explained with dropped rape genes, also explaining his calming down, but most people didn't get retested and classified without a reason.

And she was "the druggie girl" from the orgy starting in Jorge's bar, so most likely he was at least her dealer and could have been anything from being paid in sex for the drugs to her pimp/supplier depending on how far gone she was before the Joy Juice cleared up the whole drug issue.

Drat. One of each, in Dancer. I'll make it all Clostuone.

Nice try
Unfortunately since the Joy Juice is involved, Axbe has at least the magical potential that Ebsa has which is Warrior level. As an ethical human and as an ethical member of the Oner society he cannot just leave Axbe to the whims of fate. He must interfere to make sure he:
1..Gets training to make him safe
2..Gets training to make him ethical
3..Does not just get turned over to a subsection of society that will hang the "uppity Closey" label on him
4..Protects him from the 'plans' that the political groups will come up to use him for.

Jorge, with the best will and effort in the world, just does not have the background or connections to protect and train Axbe.

Re: Nice try
Jorge's gang and drug associations ended or transmuted drastically by the time Axbe was old enough to notice. So in fact, just by having a dad he's having a more standard upbringing than Ebsa, who was raised by his mother and a (deceased and never in any stories) grandmother.

At the age of fourteen, Ebsa, by law, had to be in a Oner school, either boarding or, as his mother chose, living as the dependent of a live-in servant. A year of being called names and watching his mother being spoken down to and ordered around had him edging toward gangs and skipping school.

He's not going to see Axbe's situation as needing drastic intervention. I suspect that he'll be keeping in touch, once the initial shock of the attempted massacre dies down.

Re: Nice try
I don't think that the offspring of the new Warriors are going to be left alone they way Ebasa was. Political factions, terrorist groups, and gangs are going to be looking to recruit and use Axbe.

Re: Nice try
All true, but I suspect that Jorge will be in touch about magic training after the schools prove unable to give Axbe what he needs. He will hate doing it, but he will do it anyway for his son's good.

Good idea. That never ends well. Somebody always goes and turns to the Dork Side.

Re: Official Announcement!
I mean, it's only to be expected when you take children from their parents and then train them to be magical warriors. I'm surprised any Jedi Teachers survive training their students.
