_Scrambled_ part 33

Chapter BHG

"STAND TO!" Captain Ahco put his best drill sergeant voice into the command, and the packed mass of soldiers sprang apart and let him through.

Poe and Ijje wrestled and flailed on the ground, neither doing much damage.

Ahco stepped in, grabbed Ijje by the collar and yanked him back to his feet.

Poe scrambled up, staggering a bit, but fists clenched and leaning forward, ready to dive back into the fray.

Acho jerked Ijje back as he tried to go for the priest.

"Enough of this. Let's just have a little chat before we get down to fighting again." Ahco looked over his shoulder. "I trust some of you are keeping the Earthers under observation?"

Someone from beyond the crowd, "Yes, sir. The Earthers are staying behind their wall, the POWs are almost to the clinic and that . . . Warrior . . . is coming this direction."

Ahco turned back at the Minister's voice.

"As soon as he's close enough, I am personally going to kill him." MacU was hopping on one foot, supported by a pair of guards.

"Why?" Ahco snapped. "Because he stopped them? Defeated them before you could?"

He shook Ijje, then released him. "What the hell were you thinking? They've got a bloody tank, and the turret of another. They would have pounded your wall and your troops to little bloody bits, and then they would have started shooting the kind of rounds that your shields might have been able to stop. Not that you would have had any, by then."

MacU barked a laugh. "And what would you know about it? That criminal shielded against them all by himself. I have thirty men who can shield."

"Yeah, he deflected four shells. Then went in and disabled the big guns. Did you think you could hold out for a hundred? Or do you have intel and know that they are short on rounds? Did you collect any intel at all?" Ahco felt the stir in the crowd, and turned to watch Nick swing down from the wall and walk toward them. Bottle in one hand, sandwich in the other.

Shields lowered enough to have the guards shrinking back from the diamond hard power of a Warrior's glow.

Black hair disheveled, bruises showing past the stubble of a dark beard. Blood and dirt on ripped clothes.

Hazel eyes hard as stone. Cold predator's gaze fixing on the minister.

He stalked past Ahco and stood facing the sweating minister.

Took a bite of his sandwich and stood chewing it while he studied the man.

Swallowed. "Why are you fighting? Because you have an army? Just because you felt like it? Fear?"

Nick cocked his head. "Or ambition? Do you wish to rule the world and it's tiny population?" He took another bite and waited.

Ahco had his mental shields as tight as he could get them and the Warrior was still almost painful to look at.

MacU hopped a step forward. "Only the strong survive. The One will rule this world, not those powerless Natives! I will see to it that this world is ours, right from the start. Of course we'll rule this world. Who else? You? You're a mass murdering eunuch."

"Umm, I disagree, however, sticking to your plans, rather than your pathetic insults, were you planning to enslave the Earther soldiers, or kill them? And what about the civilians?"

"We'd keep the women, of course. And the men could either work or starve."

Nick's glow chilled. "I see you have it all planned out. So . . . what about the government? When's the election? I think I'll nominate someone from the Red Zone to run for President of the World."

MacU's eyes narrowed. "We should be in a secure enough situation in a year or two to hold an election . . . but what makes you think anyone in the Red Zone will have the right to vote? You're a pack of criminals. Natives, Multitude and Halfers, the lot of you."

"Oh. A year or two. And who rules until then?"

"Me. Of course."

"And who will be making the laws?"

Glare. "I will make a start. We need a strong leader to impose order."

"You will make a rather stereotyped Tyrant. Killing people, enslaving people, making laws to suit yourself."

Nick eyed him for a long moment. "Damn you. I just want to be left alone."

MacU showed his teeth, looked around at the crowd of a couple hundred soldiers, and started grinning.

"But it looks like I'm going to have to be the tyrant."

Paging Tyrant Wizard Nihility, needed on strayed world for advising novice Tyrant Warrior.

I do like it when your characters have to deal with this sort of interesting.

It's all Sarah Hoyt's fault. "Taking over the world and leaving it ruthlessly alone."

Except when a bit of percussive maintenance is needed.

I don't think Nil is the right guy.

Ebsa and R'ad wrote papers on the Warrior transitions from fighters to district governor.

"STAND TO!" needs attention on rewrite since most of your readers will not understand it as ordering what the Captain wants done.

Yeah, I'll take suggestions. I poked at it a bit, then finally left it, because, :: ahem :: I figure someone would have a better idea.

As I remember it, when an officer or NCO wanted to rapidly get through a group they would yell "Make a hole!". I may be wrong. My military services was longer ago than i like to admit.

As I recollect, one time a sergeant wanted to get through a gaggle and simply blared, "Move it!" Somehow, even the civilians (which I was) got out of his way. Tone, more than exact words, I think was the trick.

Yeah, Captain Ahco is trying for the Drill Sergeant Voice that evokes instant unthinking obedience.

And a simple "MOVE!!!!" will work for those civilians one has to deal with. It's all about vocal projection and a tone of authority.

These are retired military working as security guards for the Ministry of War, and having spent perhaps a month (must work out the timeline!) retraining to go save the planet from those evil Earthers.

Watching their commander and a priest fighting and eager to jump in and help, or at least see it.

I don't think they'll react like civilians. What I need is something to remind them that they're on duty, ought to be facing the enemy, and make it clear that an officer is ordering them back on the job right now.

Yes, the correct "Army" term for that is "Make a hole!". As this isn't the Oner "Navy" I don't think "gangway" would fit.
