More Fluff

15 Nicholas 1402

Rael Withione Al Media Montevideo walked across the graveled yard to the target and kicked it. It fell apart in chunks with in a metallic crash.

"Twenty meters." The man behind her was grinning.

"Urfa . . . that's impossible." Rael swallowed. Closed her eyes for bravery. "My mother's been to Comet Fall. Do I need to get my genetics tested?"

"Oh, already done. Let me send you a few things. Then I swear I'm going to collect everyone who might possibly be part Fallen, and get them tested genetically, and," He pointed at the demolished engine block, "trained and tested."

"How many . . . ?"

"Other than Endi . . . Xen's twenty-five children? Only two, that I know of. "

Rael nodded. "Imde and Deim?"

"Yes." He eyed her, clearly trying to decide what, if anything, to say to her.

"My biomother's girlfriend's twins. Just please tell me I'm not Xen's sister."

That made him laugh. "No, no. I was a bit worried that you might not realize . . . well . . . "

"I never really wondered who my father was. I mean, I knew it was unlikely my rather intimidating 216 biomom could have had a child with this Egto Neartuone who's name is on my birthrecords. I . . . had a bad moment there last month when she glared at me and said she'd always rather admired Agni."

Another laugh.

"Learning she'd been to Comet Fall was actually a relief. I figured maybe this Egto really was my biofather . . . except, well, he's got brown hair and brown eyes. I was expecting a redhead."

Snort. "Between Kael's reports and Ambassador Never giving us a copy of the Fallen's report on the same incident . . . I asked Xen if the agents were anyone we knew, and he said no . . . then he said they'd gone missing in that mess when we'd hijacked the Earther's gate anchor. He sent me a picture and asked if we ever spotted them anywhere to send them home please."

He tapped at his comp then turned it to show a picture. Two men in uniform, blue and gold, grinning out of the screen. A sharp-faced man with very red hair and a handsome fellow with thick golden blond hair.

Rael put a hand to her spiked red hair. "Imde and Deim have this gorgeous, thick, golden blonde, wavy hair."

"The redhead's Bran Butcher, the blond is Oscar Harryson."

"Bran. Butcher."

"A very strong Mage, from a family of strong mages. Born, raised, and trained in Ash. The other one we know less about. 'Harryson' apparently denotes an orphan adopted by the God of Travelers, one of the original thirteen Old Gods."

"Bran. Sounds like something I'd name a dog."

"It's not actually so simple. As we've learned from Xen's children, that Wine of the Gods of his does some switching around of chromosomes to get the most powerful child possible. Your two X chromosomes are one from Kael and one from Egto. Apparently Bran has an ordinary X, so it got swapped out. Your twin friends, because their mother is just a servaone, got major three way mixes. Deim got almost half from Oscar Harryson, just Idre Withione's X substituted for his ordinary one, plus four of Idre's insertion bearing chromosomes, where Mead had no insertions. The brother's count is half Harryson's including the Y with the Comet Fall mage gene in the same place as our Priest gene. The other half is a mix of Mead's and Idro's chromosomes."

Urfa chuckled. "We've asked them nicely to come visit. Like most of my polite invitations, it was accepted. Would you like to pick them up at the airport tomorrow?"

"Oh. My. One."

Rael glanced at her . . . what were they, anyway? Step brother and sister? At least Imde could still speak. Deim was frozen, mouth half open in disbelief as they stared at the picture of Oscar Harryson and Bran Butcher.

"Yeah. No problem guessing which one's my father. And Imde? That defective priest gene? It is actually the Comet Fall mage gene."

Deim twitched. "I'd say something like 'that's impossible' if only that guy wasn't the spitting image of Imde. What is this going to do to my security rating? Am I going to lose my job?"

"No, no. Urfa just wants to know how powerful the combination of Oner and Fallen genes is."

Imde'd was sitting in the back seat of her little car, hanging over the front seat to see the screen in his twin sister's hands. "So we're getting tested? Or trained?"

Deim shot a grin back at him. "Does it feel funny to be on the other side, Professor?"

"It has been over a decade since I graduated. Probably be good for me. Umm, Rael, Deim got a lot of magic training, but I didn't."

"Just micro manufacturing, really." Deim looked worried. "I hope they don't expect fireworks and miracles."

"And I'm a mathematician."

"Don't worry. We just need some idea of the spread of magic abilities in mixes. I think Urfa's wondering about Xen's kids."

"Oh, they're all, what, about five years old?"

"Yeah. They're sort of spread out over about four months. Safar to Rajab. So they're all five now."

Imde sat back. "Those two guys . . . how powerful are they?"

"We don't know. Urfa says Xen said they disappeared under odd circumstances, so they don't even know if they're alive or dead." Rael bit her lip. "I suspect they're quite strong."

Deim eyed her. "Because you are."

This would be six years before, black point clan, right?
(Black Point Clan_ new start is 1408yp and Jay is 11)
So it would be 1402yp.
That would it put it right at the end of 'A Small Family Wedding' in 'Rael'
And two years before 'No Confidence'

So why did Rael never talked to Xen about her genealogy?

Imho it would be smoother to put it after 'No Confidence', when Xen & 'The Fallen', Ahja, Fean, Ra'd, Ebsa etc. are busy with the cannibal world issues.

I know I mentioned it before, but Imde is a sea prince. Could be funny if he ever visits Comet Fall's coasts.

I'm not sure, but did those two (Bran and Oscar) sired other children?
(Sure they did, but did you mention it?)

Well they were playing around in the Amir's harim. Make of that what you will.

_Sea Wolves_ had a run down of other children, but Never probably decided that would be TMI.
ekuah on April 10th, 2017 05:56 pm (UTC)
Wait wait wait.
I just noticed something.
'Fluff' and 'More Fluff' can't be part of the same story.

The mentioning of 'the failed assassination' can't be no earlier than 1404yp.

So 'Fluff' must be another story, or later be than 'More Fluff', right?
matapampamuphoff on April 10th, 2017 09:00 pm (UTC)
Fluff is not a story. "Fluff" is any number of scenes that pop into my mind and get written down, in case I need them later. Completely unconnected to each other.

This would be after _A Small Family Wedding_ where Rael first met Deim and Imde.

Rael doesn't much like the thought of being not-all-Oner. One suspects that Xen has seen the recording of . . . Hmm, I'll post it tomorrow, although I'm sure I've posted it before. He probably finds it amusing that Rael doesn't mention it. As a geneticist who has associated with the various descendants of Beck Butcher and Coo Miller all his life, it's unlikely that he didn't recognized her parentage quite early on.
ekuah on April 11th, 2017 12:38 am (UTC)
Why should he look at her genetics?
I mean it's a conscious effort to 'look small' (looking at the DNA)
I don't think it's something they do with every person on an everyday basis.
I imagine it is more like us looking for the eye color of the person you are speaking with.
It's easy to do, but Pam can you actually tell the eye color of the last (non family) person you spoke with?
I'm guessing that you can't (unless it's an exceptional color), because you don't look for such things usually.

How about "I wonder how magically dangerous she is?"
Or "I wonder if the Oners have the same dominant red hair gene?"
ekuah on April 11th, 2017 12:55 am (UTC)
Can't remember those passages.
But if you say so, he is probably perfectly aware of her ancestry.

What I wanted to say was, that the genetics is maybe something that is easy to see but is usually overlooked.

Rael was hospitalized from really severe, thought likely to kill her, injuries. Paralyzed. Odds a technologically sophisticated society would run a DNA analysis in case she needed organ donation or became a donor? For that matter, she's the equivalent of Secret Service. Is there a sufficiently advanced society that wouldn't be running DNA analysis on all Secret Service agents? We're shown by Izzo that this is a device a person can own, after all.

matapampamuphoff on April 11th, 2017 02:22 am (UTC)
Remember that they have only just come to realize that there are non-Oners with almost identical genetic insertions. Umm, I'll go dig up that meeting . . .
ekuah on April 11th, 2017 08:47 am (UTC)
I think you misunderstood me too.
I meant that one of the Fallen wouldn't probably notice that Rael is part fallen. Because they usually don't look for such things.
Remember that they were only recently started to look for the witch-X-chromosome, when a witch's daughter is an unusual late bloomer.

Sure the empire have genetic scans, and would see it right away. Or at least they would as soon as they know where to look at.
The biggest giveaway are the non-standard Oner-X or non-standard Priest-Y chromosomes. Since Rael had two perfectly normal Oner-X it is harder to tell. I'm guessing that you have to look harder to see differences in some of the insertions.
And noticing that the non-insertion genes are from another world (like the red hair)? Not a chance. The oners would think that such stuff is inherited from the multitude and therefore worthless.
matapampamuphoff on April 11th, 2017 02:17 pm (UTC)
Again, you're missing the effects of expertise. Xen is a geneticist, and a genetic engineer. He tends to analyze genes at the same time he analyzes their speech, body language, indication of weapons on their persons, and magical aura.

And keep in mind that there's a huge overlap in their genetics. The first research was university-based and released. All the companies back on Earth were reverse engineering each other's products. Probably a brisk market in industrial engineering.

The original Chou had an interest in spreading the knowledge around and getting as many variations as possible developed.

The commercial companies were interested in salable products. Many of the artificial genes were strictly cosmetic. Shorten the nose, pin the ears back, dominate blonde gene, dominate red hair (especially nice with the peacock blue gene) and so forth.

The Oners have a sub-dominate red that blends nicely with the dominate blonde which the Exile Worlds all have (See Oscar and all his kids) or livens up brown hair. The Comet Fall Dominate Red isn't found there, but it is on Purple, I haven't pinned down its presence or absence on the other Exile Worlds.

Okay, okay. I get it. And I already conceded that he is perfectly aware of her genetics (did so 5 posts ago).

It still seems rude to me to check the genetics of every acquaintance. It feels like looking under a skirt, only even more personal.

matapampamuphoff on April 11th, 2017 03:05 pm (UTC)
Oh, not every acquaintance, but people he might have to fight, he'll check for a few of the nastier magic genes. Can he slice? Can he slice further than ten feet? Rael, whom he was instantly attracted to? Oh yeah, he checked her out thoroughly.
(Anonymous) on January 6th, 2018 03:02 pm (UTC)
Has it ever been established who the original Chou was? We know he was engineered but who by and it sort of seems that he was a marooned explorer trying to get home. Where did was he and his family exiled too? Steamworld maybe?
matapampamuphoff on January 7th, 2018 04:31 pm (UTC)
Chou may have been a scout from the Cyborgs.

The family was all exiled, probably to the Steam World although I've got one more of the five Exile Worlds unaccounted for. Possibly the one where "Eloping" takes place. That would be easy enough to shoehorn in Chou as the President for Life and don't disturb him with local matters, you won't like the responce.
muirecanmuirecan on April 10th, 2017 04:26 pm (UTC)
Ah good, It is about time Rael learns her formal genetics. Mind you this is earlier than I expected but then she is private and not one to bring up something like this.
Michawl DolbearMichawl Dolbear on April 10th, 2017 04:42 pm (UTC)
There is a possible oddie of there being a /colour/ image of the two Mages.

Harry perhaps ?

Same for the photo frame that Xen had in Empire, but here it is plausible that the Old Wulf took the images.
matapampamuphoff on April 10th, 2017 08:58 pm (UTC)
Photography is just chemicals. With the Old Gods around it's one tech that didn't regress too far, although it's neither cheap nor ubiquitous.
mbarkermbarker on April 11th, 2017 12:17 am (UTC)
Of course, especially with micromagical manufacturing in the mix, a photo may not be exactly a photo? I mean, transferring an image onto a blank by magical methods could take visuals, but could also take mental images, right? And once you have the image captured on the primary, transferring to multiple secondaries (also known as printing) is a pretty simple process.

Hum. Given the hijinks I went through to clean up pictures while processing them (once upon a time in a darkroom), having the ability to straighten out the image while creating a "negative" that has the ability to transfer an image to other prepared "sheets" where they happily process themselves and freeze? Wow, that would be nice.

Heck, a properly prepared sheet can probably be exposed using a pinhole camera or maybe one of those fancy lenses, and play the Polaroid trick of turning itself into a picture?

Lots of ways to make that work, actually.
matapampamuphoff on April 11th, 2017 04:45 pm (UTC)
Oners are better at micromanipulation than the Fallen. None-the-less mental imprinting of pictures is rarely done. Mental transfers of visuals, say crimes and perps, is moderately common, usually moderated by trained Priests, as in Truth Matches.
