Fluff
The Brain isn't up to greater things. Yet.

"Honestly Rael! That was the worst yet!"

Rael giggled and hugged her sister. "Oh, you're just jealous because they aren't selling posters of you."

"Yes?" A skeptical masculine drawl from her brother-in-law. "Frozen in the act of stalking your prey?"

Fortunately her niece and nephew arrive at speed just then.

"Aunt Rael, Aunt Rael!" a chorus of young voices, and a double zap of magical relationship as they ran up and hugged her.

Rael straightened. "My, you two are getting tall. Seven years old, One, it seems like just last year you were grubby little babies."

Ryol sniffed. "Razz is the grubby baby. But I don't change her diapers very often."

Rael giggled, and looked around for the missing niece . . . who was staggering through the door with the nanny hovering.

"Walking already! Raaz! Come to Auntie Rael!" Rael went to one knee and held her hands out. The little girl stopped and eyed her, then made a run for the safety of her mother's arms.

"Oh dear. I think I haven't been visiting often enough."

"Six months is a long time when you're only thirteen months old." Ox--Ahxe Withione Timber Black Point—was the head administrator of the Montevideo District law enforcement establishment. "But don't worry, everyone knows all about you, and will tell it all, to all of your relatives."

"Oh. Dear."

Raod snickered, and stood up. The arm not holding Razz went around Rael's shoulders. "It's all right. We'll love you, no matter how bad your reputation gets."

Arno bounced on his toes, eyes bright. "Were you really going to kill him?"

"Well . . . I was trying. And I'm really glad he didn't let me."

Ryol grinned. "Do you love Xen? Everyone says it's so romantic! The Bad Guy! He's so handsome! Is he really bad? Does he kill people?"

"Umm . . . " Rael caught glares from both parents. "It's not that he's bad. He's the enemy. Well, a soldier in the army of our enemy. He follows orders like I follow orders. But President Orde is try to make peace with them. So maybe Xen won't be an enemy forever."

Rael glared at Ox, who was stifling laughter. "What?"

"Like you follow orders? You mean, poorly?"

Rael sighed. "Is it worse to be suspected of being an assassin, or to be known as the Multiverse's most incompetent assassin? All right. Fine. Both of the men I was ordered to kill are still alive. But those are the only two I've ever been ordered to kill."

Ox choked.

"So I really don't think I count as an assassin."

Then her parents arrived.

Her mother with a resigned sigh, her father with a censorious glower.

"Sorry."

"For trying to kill someone? For trying to start a war? For failing? For making a spectacle of yourself?"

Rael thought that over. "Yes . . . that pretty much covers the whole thing, doesn't it?"

So the lesson to be learned here is that Rael makes a terrible Assassin.

Yep. She's really under utilized. I need to throw her into the shark infested waters where she _wants_ to succeed.

Odds are very good that she would do better if she had actual motivation to succeed.

Fluff is good. Fluff is where you get to figure out if it's eider down or cat hair. And if you get enough fluff, all you have to do is knit a mattress cover to stuff it in.

Rael and her 'nieces'
One day Rael or Xen will realise who the Nieces are. What then?

Re: Rael and her 'nieces'
That one's about half written. Waiting its turn.

A version was snippeted _Children of a Foreign God_ back in March 2015 with an additional scene last year.

Pam decided that the twins were smart and would work it out for themselves.

Is this the one with the people trapped in the bank vault?

Re: Rael and her 'nieces'
Yep.

I wonder if I could (usefully!) tangle that up with Ra'd's stay on Embassy?

The kids would all be 11ish. Too young for proper magic practice unless there were a whole lot of early bloomers, which is not unlikely with Xen's kids.

Meh. I think not. I'll have to think of some other form of mayhem to toss at them. Maybe they sneak out to explore the Maze . . .

RE: Re: Rael and her 'nieces'
If they're kids, in One World, they should probably have a close to home adventure. One World seems likely to be much more restrictive of children than Comet Fall. Urban versus Frontier and all. Getting to the Maze should be near-impossible, for a Oner kid, short of their parents being stationed on Embassy.

How old are they as of current published? Could we have Raod freaking out because her four-year-olds have gone from twin-talk to telepathy? That would be a very small-scale story, but massive to Raod and Ox. How are they going to get them to communicate with the rest of the world? Could leave some interesting openings for the future, like all of Ox and Raod's servants being Multitude . . .

Or maybe a little adventure with a home grown crook that thinks that kidnapping would be a good way to get something from (pick a relative)? Or just a small time child molester picks the twins as victims? They could be pretty much any age between Xen's grasped power at four and the early teens that seems to be Oner average, depending on how young/small you want to write them.

Re: Re: Rael and her 'nieces'
The kidnapping could also be done by a disgruntled War Party member. Trying to get some revenge on Xen's kids.

The twins could escape and end up at Harry's tavern for some time (days-weeks). And it's not that they do a genetic scan on every orphan that gets swept up their doorstep. So Harry won't notice who the are at first.

Re: Re: Rael and her 'nieces'
I'm thinking in terms of the kids going to Embassy for lessons and getting into trouble there. The Maze is reasonably accessible from there, although no doubt Xen and Q move it occasionally to minimize the number of people they have to track down.
