_Professor_ part 24

Just so you know I'm not completely goofing off . . .

“Yes. Disco reports from the Utopia battle. I’ll forward them to you.” Rael tossed a look toward Xen herself. “And ask Xen if he has any other evidence from the other branches of the Cyborg . . . well, I suppose it’s an Empire. Sometimes it seems more like an infection, the way it spreads.”

After the party it was time for swabs and labeled bags.

When she eyed Xen, he shrugged. "I was watching my tongue, not doing instant genetic analyses at a party. Whatever's lurking behind this . . . interesting situation . . . is nothing I know about."

Indeed? And with wording like that I can't rule out Comet Fall. One trusts you aren't sending me into a maze, to protect anyone from Magic Central. Or whom the Collective thinks should keep up the good work.

Or, dammit . . . he wouldn't fake DNA, would he?

Rael winced. I need to stop suspecting him!

A deep chuckle. "It's much more fun when you do suspect me." A kiss on the back of her neck. "Although the roots of this have got to be several generations back. It's too widespread to just be the Directorate School."

She leaned back into him. "And starts with poor childhood preparation. The whole bloody society is infected with all the wrong ways to raise children who will grasp power."

"Yes. So . . . what exactly is the relationship between the One and the Collective Subconscious? Who is in control . . . not that I'm not all too aware of how that works on me, but . . ."

"The collective subconscious . . . people with power are louder in it . . . but still a minority. It influences the general tenor of the One. As we used to be aggressive, but after Ajha broke the absolute majority and argued for peace and friendship, we're . . . better."

He grinned and kept his mouth shut.
