Ye Gads! Those hands look bad at this light level & size. Lengthening the sleeves will also be necessary. Back to the drawing board. So feel free to point out everything else that needs fixing.

On your sample of the cover for Nowhere Man you list it as Book 35 in the Wine of the Gods series and on this one you use the same number.

Yes. I'm waffling over which one to publish first. BPC is done. NM needs a bit of work.

guess I'm going to have to re-read BPC. I don't remember a terrain description that would match this image. Guess I'm thinking the lands surrounding the houses would be more "park-like" and less wild. To me this looks like you're out in one of our national parks on a mountainside. Maybe if you thin out the background, or put a hint of civilization peeking out?

I like the general look of it. If it is supposed to represent a scene from the book, I agree the hillside looks more thickly-forested than I'd imagined the hillside from the book. OTOH, a cover doesn't have to faithfully portray a scene, merely convey a positive impression that draws us in and gets us to buy it. :)

:: Grin :: The background is a photograph of mine, about a mile inland and uphill of Black Point in northern California. Check Google Earth for "Sea Ranch" to see what I based the whole enclave on. Oh, never mind. GE ditched all their photos. Grr.

Thanks. On the bright-ish side, not quite all photos are gone from Google Earth, merely the vast majority of them. They came from a now-closed service call Panoramio. The ones that are left are a much sparser set, from Google Maps Photos, which is far more urban focused. Between what's left and StreetView, I get the idea, and the picture fits well for the area.

I just figured it was more open because in the story the equestrienne spots Ajha on the balcony, and the inhabitants of the house can kinda see the police responding the next morning. OTOH, even in the forest flashing police lights can probably be seen for a good distance, and the house may have been elevated enough, or there might have been a gap in the foliage, such that Xiat's equestrienne friend could spot him.

You need to use the scene where Xiat has Ajha cuffed and is sitting on him. It is absolutely iconic. And is referenced several times in the story.

Two men fighting in a wilderness under the moon... I'm not sure what genre that calls to mind? Frontier western, maybe?

I know Wine of the Gods series link helps, but the picture... could you toss something in to give us a hint of futurism? Not sure what would fit... a flying car is always a good thing.

This isn't finished. I just wanted some first impressions. I'll have to add some sparklies and lens flares for the magic being tossed around and work over the title a bit more, maybe change the cor on my name. And do something about the hands!
mbarkermbarker on February 14th, 2018 04:57 am (UTC)
Hum, maybe the hands are someone partway through changing into a deer? That might do it...

I like it, but the squatting man reminds me of a werewolf.

Like the background, not so much the figures. Also, I don't think this signals the story. BPC is 90% political intrigue. I'd think something more abstract, maybe a sword in the style of God of Assassins' Dagger, would signal that better? This looks, well, more like Ebsa serves Dinos style adventure.

Gah. I never look at cover art. I buy by author. I aways have. I should keep my mouth shut on this stuff.

Bah.Humbug. I hate trying to signal "magic" on a cover. Replaced the first with another "concept"

I hate to say it, but my first reaction was "Why'd they hang Christmas lights on a tree in the forest?" Don't get me wrong, the effects themselves are neat, and I like the spotlight/shield effect, but the little bulb-sized colored lights against pines have me humming "O Christmas Tree".

I like this third version, with the light effects around Ajha and Bo, but without the "Christmas lights." I think I like it a bit more than the ocean cover.
