Boy, my perception is low this morning. Took me five or six back and forths before I figured out what was changed.

With the machine circle, it tells us out-right that it's a manufactured opening of some sort. Without, it *could* be a completely unlit cave (unlikely) or so other unknown opening.

With, its a gate from a known to a bright horizon. Without, it's a gate TO something, with the "from" left unstated.

Given how you've set up the normal powered gates in later stories, the "with" scenario fits what you've done. But, I think it could be more "accurate" to have a less metallic circle, and maybe more "force field" like. Then, maybe also have some barely revealed detail outside the circle so the "from" is a bit more stated.

But that might be more finicky than you're looking for.

With ring. But I do like the idea of making it just a glowing spectrum or something more force field than simple mechanical...
